How The MMA Will Affect Your Publishing Income
The passage of the Hatch-Goodlatte Music Modernization Act (MMA) finally updated federal music copyright law for the first time since the Digital Millennium Copyright Act was enacted two decades ago. A rare collaboration between the music and tech industries, the new law includes a variety of reforms that will make it easier to negotiate for and collect fair royalty rates, establish that digital services must pay for the use of pre-1972 recordings, and create a new mechanical licensing collective (MLC) to oversee the collection and distribution of digital royalties. But what does this mean in terms of concrete dollars and cents? In this session, major and independent publishers will discuss the MMA in-depth and explain just how its provisions will impact the pocketbooks of songwriters and other rights-holders.
